What to expect

The GAW Coach Approach to Leadership is a five-month program that results in 62 hours of coach specific training that adheres to the skills and competencies of the International Coach Federation. The program is designed using a cohort structure of 5 and up to 24 participants that will work through the program as a group and will be assigned to a “Learning Circle."  A Learning Circle consists of a group of five to six students and is led by an ICF certified professional coach that meets for 2.5 - 3 hours once a month.

This group is designed to provide additional in-depth learning, practice, and a deeper level of interaction, focusing on individual and Learning Circle needs. This experience is often times one of the most impactful highlights of any coach training program.

The Work in and between Sessions

The program is held over five months with months/sessions 1, 3, and 5 being three days long, while months/sessions 2 and 4 being hours long.

Sessions 1, 3, and 5 are eight hours long each day. Each session will have a Leaning Circle that will occur for roughly 3 hours on either the second or third day. You will have an observed coaching session with sessions 1, 3, and 5. Sessions 2 and 4 are meant to provide additional interaction and practice with your mentor and colleagues on the challenges and opportunities you face in your pro-bono coaching and your growth as a coach.

In addition, after every session, you will have between 4 – 5 hours of additional reading and work that you will submit to your classroom instructors or program director.

Finally, you will be expected to accumulate 30 hours of pro-bono coaching hours over a six month program that you and your Learning Circle Advisor will critique.

ICF Approved Training

The program is designed to fulfill the coach specific training requirements of the International Coaching Federation’s Associate Coaching Certification. Please consider your schedule and other work and life commitments you may have before committing to the program.

The skills and competencies are very similar to the backgrounds of many human resource and human services related disciplines including counseling, pastoring, consulting, and clinical psychology. However, there are definite distinctions between those fields and how ICF defines the domain of “coaching.”

A major difference between coaching and other disciples is that coaching is not meant to be prescriptive or “coach driven.” Many coaching students find this distinction to be very challenging to overcome at first but, over time, find that it is actually liberating to allow the client the freedom and responsibility to own their own destiny.
